Robert Whittaker gave props to Yoel Romero for finishing Luke Rockhold at UFC 221.
Robert Whittaker might just be one of the classiest fighters in the sport.
The soft-spoken middleweight champion has stormed to the top of the rankings and, unlike many of his fellow competitors, hasn’t uttered a single bad word or engaged in any trash talk with his opponents.
To top it off, ‘The Reaper’ has no problem congratulating potential challengers when they come out on top.
Whittaker, 27, praised Yoel Romero in Spanish after ‘Soldier of God’s’ brutal third-round knockout of Luke Rockhold at UFC 221.
@YoelRomeroMMA Felicitaciones. Una gran pelea. Merecido triunfo. Abrazos
— Robert Whittaker (@robwhittakermma) February 11, 2018
“[Yoel Romero] Congratulations. “A great fight. Deserved triumph. Hugs,” Whittaker’s tweet reads.
The New Zealand-born Whittaker beat Romero via unanimous decision to win the interim middleweight title at UFC 213 but was later promoted to official champ after Georges St-Pierre relinquished the belt in December.
Whittaker, who is on an eight-fight win streak, was originally scheduled to defend his title against Luke Rockhold at UFC 221 but was forced to withdraw from the pay-per-view due to injury. That’s when Romero, who hails from Cuba, stepped in on short notice and crumpled Rockhold with a left hand in the third round.
Although Whittaker already beat Romero decisively last year, UFC president Dana White is planning to book a championship rematch between the two middleweights when Whittaker has fully recovered from injury.
